The teaching profession is no stranger to recruitment crises. Governments over the past two decades have struggled to attract – and retain – teaching talent. But the latest figures are particularly dire and set to decline further – not least because soaring student numbers at home are coinciding with increasing demand for UK teachers overseas. Ann Mroz will argue that unless we start to think more imaginatively about how to recruit and retain the next generation of teachers none of our ambitions for education will be realised.
