Matthew Close has taught for over 20 years across five different independent schools. He started his career as a Geography teacher before moving on to be Head of Geography. His first Senior Leadership role was as a Head of Sixth Form, and in 2014, he was appointed Vice Principal at Surbiton High School, where he is responsible for the well-being and development of pupils and staff. He has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership – his dissertation being on the use of value-added data within academic departments. He is a strong advocate of work of positive psychology in schools and the research of Professor Martin Seligman. In September 2017, he launched Surbiton High School’s Charter for Well-being.
